noitaminA and the Future of Anime: A Conversation

Hope you all enjoyed the conversation between Shinbo and Nishio Ishin. Today, I’ve got something fairly enlightening for you all: this is a conversation between Aki Takanori (CEO, Good Smile Company), Ooyama Ryou (Producer, Aniplex) and Yamamoto Kouji (Editor-in-chief, noitaminA) about the current state of the anime industry. Enjoy. (Again, all emphasis is the original author’s.)

Blog Carnival: A Comedy of Errors

LOOK AT ALL THAT EROHON!

Now, you all know that I have a hard-on for collaborative projects. Being in a community is all about connection. So when FoxyLadyAyame over at The Beautiful World alerted me to a collaboration project she initiated, I jumped on it. Apparently, I’m supposed to discuss “anime culture in my local/national community.” Now, that’s about as broad as you can get for a topic. So I scoured my memory (for about 10 seconds) to find the story that perfectly illustrates how anime transcends cyberspace and permeates into meatspace.

This is the story of how I met c2switch.

WARNING! Images not totally SFW. Read at your own risk. (Don’t read my fucking blog at work. Seriously, there are better ways to kill time.)

Relationships on the Road

This doesn’t happen at school, you know.

I apologize for the long silence. Real life has taken its toll on me― you know how it goes. End-of-semester hustle and bustle. That’s all over now. I’m home and bored, so I’ll be writing more often.

In any case, on to today’s discussion…

Every gakuen anime has a field trip. Whether this be a summer retreat for a club, a class trip to Kyoto or a balls-out, all-expenses paid  to Okinawa, the heroes and heroines of every schoolyard leave the schoolyard. It’s a great time for them to understand each other, make some memories and, with any luck, fall in love with one another.

This post inspired by and dedicated to Krizzlybear.

Exploring Military Insignia in Strike Witches

What a great titlecard. Seriously.

It’s no secret that I love Strike Witches. However, did you know that I also loved the visual design of Strike Witches? I bet you didn’t! Today, I’ll talk you all on a whimsical romp through all 11 members of the 501, discussing various elements concerning the construction of their various insignia. What’s fascinating about these insignia is, of course, that they don’t really appear anywhere other than the ending credits. No matter. We can still discuss them. (This post was inspired by Bitmap and JPMeyer. Here’s to you, bros.)

Looking Westward: Visualising America in Post-War Japan

Racism – ever a force in the modern world.

I’m quite surprised by Sakamichi no Apollon. I thought I signed up for a show about kids jamming together. Instead, in the span of four short episodes, we’ve gone from “awkward kid makes unlikely friends” to “rich cultural text about the legacy of the American occupation.” I can only hope that it continues to tend towards the latter path. NB: Spoilers up to Episode 4 of Sakamichi no Apollon.

Friendship in the Age of K-On!

Look how they’re not ALL having fun in this picture. Someone’s getting shafted.

Those of you who follow me on Twitter have heard me rave about Natsuiro Kiseki. Watching it has been a great pleasure― it’s the show I look forward to most every week. (Yes, even over Sakamichi no Apollon and Nyaruko-san.) Part of the joy of Natsuiro Kiseki comes from its portrayal of friendship. It’s certainly more compelling than girls drinking tea and eating cake all afternoon.

For the Love of the Logo

One of the most iconic logos in recent years.

As most of you know, I’m fascinated by graphic design. Some of you may know that I’ve been meaning to write a post on the logotypes of anime series. The original inspiration for this post comes from Yuzuya, a doujin group that focuses on typography and graphic design in anime. Unfortunately, the vast majority of anime logotypes look somewhat generic and uninspired, but there are several that stand out in my memory. Unfortunately, I cannot talk about them all, but here are some of my favourites.

Uchuu Kyoudai 3: Yet More Exams

Those roses, man... they're becoming more and more prevalent whenever "yaoi" is involved, I swear.

This week, Mutta’s physical fitness is pushed to the limits, and he finds out just how much of a piece of shit he really is. (No, really, it’s all quantified according to scientific procedures. Mmhmm.)

Boo Hoo, JC Staff is Adapting a Key Game

You're upset? Over THIS piece of shit? (Yes, yes, I realise this is Kud Wafter.)

The announcement that JC Staff will produce an anime adaptation of Little Busters! has certainly caused a huge brouhaha. I haven’t seen the anisphere this mad since OreImo turned into a pandering piece of crap. As always, everyone who has an opinion on either Little Busters! or JC Staff have divided themselves into two camps: those who think that JC Staff will ruin Little Busters! forever (the proverbial “KyoAni fanboys”) and those who think that KyoAni fanboys are overreacting and childish (the proverbial “Academy for Animated Pictures Arts and Sciences”.) Oh please.
