I seek to constantly improve myself. My mantra in life is that I should go to be every night being a better person than I was when I woke up. This mantra of self-improvement has impacted almost every aspect of my life— even my otaku life.

Thank you all for your interesting and insightful responses (except for you, Scamp.) It’s fascinating the huge range of responses I’ve received, from sympathy to mockery to pity. One of my very insightful commenters brought up the issue of condescension when talking about anime, and that’s where I would like to go next.

On Shame

THIS. This is what I picture myself to look like when I'm watching anime.

 My 12 Years of Anime series seemed to go over pretty well with readers, and since this season’s been a bit slow for me, I’m going to write this second set of personal essays about life as an Otaku. I’m naming it the Emotions Cycle, and it’s an exploration into how I feel about being an anime fan. The first thing I’m going to talk about is shame.

The Failure of Nisemonogatari

I mean, REALLY now, tell me that's not a dakimakura cover.

Nisemonogatari is quite the spectacular failure, in my book. It panders excessively to fans of its predecessor while maintaining little of its wit. Fundamentally, the most compelling aspect of Bakemonogatari is missing from Nisemonogatari. I’m speaking, of course, about Araragi’s romantic relationship with Senjogahara.
